View From the Top: Industry Thanks Google Affiliate Network for Closing

The King is Dead, Long Live the King!!

Okay, Google never was the king of affiliate marketing, but you get the point.

Opportunity for the entire affiliate marketing space came in the form of an announcement in April that Google Affiliate Network would be closing its doors in July.

At first, there was a lot of posturing about what this mean for the channel if big and powerful Google couldn’t make a go of affiliate marketing. Then came the realizations that Google probably shouldn’t have been in the business in the first place since it just wasn’t a fit with their other goals (I discussed this in a post that came out immediately after the closure announcement.) Then came the speculation that Google was going to create its own marketplace to eat the lunch of Amazon and everyone else in the affiliate space.

Of course that all happened in the blink of an eye and then the feeding frenzy began almost immediately.  Soon after that we all calmed down; got to business and realized that this was a huge opportunity for everyone.

Social over-hyped, mobile is not…”Just 1.55% of all site traffic analyzed in the report came from social networks, down from 2.36% in the first quarter of 2012. And the conversion rate for consumers coming from social networks trails the rates for older forms of online marketing, with e-mail at 3.19%, search at 1.95% and social at 0.71%.”

View From the Top: Google Wallet Opens Affiliate Opportunities

Last week at Google I/O 2013, a conference held in San Francisco, coupon affiliate RetailMeNot was revealed as a featured partner for the new Google Wallet – which is expected to be available to consumers later this year.

RetailMeNot.com joins big name retailers that are also working with the Google Wallet service including The Sports Authority, Forever 21, Advance Auto Parts, Last Call by Neiman Marcus, Alaska Airlines, Red Mango, Marriott Rewards, and The Body Shop and many others.
